Iraqi Women Journalists Forum and Women’s organizations demand cancellation of the suggestion to amend the Personal Status Law No. 188 currently in Iraqi Parliament

As part of the activities of the Shahrazad Project, the Iraqi Women Journalists Forum IWJF was held in cooperation with the Arab Union for Specialized Women, Iraq Branch, and the Coalition of Resolution 1325, On Saturday, 10 June, a dialogue seminar on (The Suggestion to amend the Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959) , in the presence of a group of politicians, parliamentarians, Journalists, academics and activists, and representatives of civil society organizations

.

The seminar, which was moderated by Ms. Aseel Al-Bayati, welcomed the audience and introduced the seminar curriculum, followed by a speech by Mrs. Nibras Al Maamouri, A head of IWJF, For this activity under the activities of the project Shahrazad .. The project, which distinguished by its originality in terms of a series of legal seminars held by the Forum for the purpose of advocacy and Journalists and legal support

.

Al-Mamouri praised the courage and role of Rep. Rizan Sheikh Delir, member of the Parliamentary Women’s Committee, objecting to the Suggestion to amend the Personal Status Law and demanding that the presidency of the Council not to discuss what is presented, Stressing: the need to come out of this seminar an official statement signed by organizations and personalities in which the Iraqi parliament calls for the cancellation of the proposal as a return to what was put forward in the form of the Al-Ja’afari law

.

For her part, MP Rezan Sheikh Delir member of the parliamentary women’s committee expressed her thanks and gratitude to the Iraqi Media Forum to discuss this serious issue, which negatively affects the future of women and break up society. And she added “All Iraqi laws are the main source of Islamic law and the current amendment suggestion; an attempt to stop the work of the courts, to return to religious sects, to encourage the marriage of minors girls and to marry outside the court

.

Followed by a speech by Ms. Willette Korkis of the Secretariat of the Alliance for Resolution 1325 on (the extent to which the amendment of the Personal Status Law with 1325 and the INAP National Plan)
The plan included the commitment of the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government to intensify their efforts to increase women’s participation in decision-making and rehabilitation of battered women

The amendment of discriminatory legislation against women and the promotion of gender equality in Iraq, regionally and globally. Ms. Willette Korkis considered what is proposed in the proposal to amend the law is a clear violation of the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and the national plan for the implementation of the resolution. Mrs. Fatna Baban, President of the Arab Union for Specialized Women / Iraq Branch, reviewed the Personal Status Law in force and the articles submitted for amendment (2, 5, 6, 9, 24, 26), And the social and psychological consequences of this, especially with regard to the marriage of special minors girls and the high rate of death, and sexual relations disorders because of the lack of children to the nature of the relationship

Baban stressed ” that it is time to pass a civil law that sets the age of marriage at 18 and protects children and girls from early marriage”
Dr. Bushra al-Obeidi, legal adviser to the Iraqi Women Journalists Forum, reviewed her observations on the suggestion to amend the Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959, In addition to the paragraphs relating to alimony and the provisions of ratios, divorce and kit. It also linked the competent court (personal status court) to the Scientific Council of the Sunni and Shiite sects, which threatens the unity and independence of the judiciary and other courts.
She concluded her paper: that a recommendation issued by the (CEDAW committee) obliges the Iraqi government to repeal the draft law on the conditions of Jaafari and Article 41 constitutional and made them recommendations that must be implemented within two years

MP Rehab Al-Aboudi added ””There is a trend in many countries towards the unification of women’s protection projects and laws such as marriage and divorce contracts, And today we do not have a problem in the mechanism of marriage, but the problem lies in the marriage of minors girls , so we must enact laws that respect religions, nationalities and sects, “considering what has been raised recently an electoral paper and political agreements

The Deputy of the Ministry of Culture Fawzi Atrushi stressed ”the role of civil society organizations to stand against such legislation and activate conferences, campaigns and publications to stop the face of this law, because what is proposed is the killing of the civil state project

The participants discussed the importance of awareness and education campaigns for citizens on the negative aspects of implementing the draft law and agreed to issue an official statement calling on the parliament to cancel the proposal to amend the personal status law, especially since the law in force is one of the best laws in the Middle East

.

The activities of the Iraqi Women Journalists Forum are part of the Shahrazad project for its third season in cooperation with the Bridge to ..
